The new way customers look for a business
Five years ago a customer typed "pharmacy near me open now" into Google and chose from a list. Today a growing share of them ask an AI tool: "Which clinic in my city does same-day dental implants?" or "Who imports laboratory consumables into Saudi Arabia?" They get a paragraph with two or three names in it, and they call the first one.
If your business is not one of those names, you are not in the market for that customer. GEO is the work of getting into the paragraph.
What GEO actually is
Generative engine optimization is the set of practices that make your business easy for AI tools to understand, trust and quote. These tools build their answers from pages they can read: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, articles that mention you.
They prefer sources that:
- answer a specific question directly, in the first lines, not after a long introduction
- state facts consistently everywhere: the same name, address, services and claims on every page and profile
- carry structured data, the machine-readable labels that say "this is a business, this is its service, this is a question and its answer"
- are updated regularly, so the tool sees a living source rather than a page from years ago
- are written plainly, because an AI quotes plain sentences and skips marketing language
None of this is a trick. It is the same thing a careful journalist would want from a source.
GEO compared with SEO
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list of links | Be named inside the answer |
| Unit | The page | The fact, the sentence, the answer |
| What wins | Keywords, links, speed, authority | Direct answers, consistency, structured data, clarity |
| Result | A click | A recommendation, often without a click |
| Measured by | Position, clicks | Mentions in AI answers, enquiries that say "ChatGPT told me" |
They are not rivals. A site with poor SEO is rarely read by AI tools at all. A site with strong SEO but pages full of slogans is read and then ignored, because there is nothing quotable in it. The strongest position is both.
The five things that make a small business quotable
- Answer pages. One page per question your customers really ask, with the question as the title and a 40 to 60 word direct answer at the top. Our article on writing a FAQ page that ChatGPT quotes shows the format.
- Consistent facts. The same business name, phone, address, services and opening hours on your site, your Google profile and every directory. Contradictions make tools cautious.
- Structured data. Labels in the page code for your organisation, your services, your articles and your FAQs. Visitors never see them; AI tools and search engines rely on them.
- Regular articles. Short pieces that each answer one question in your field, published on a schedule. They widen the set of questions your business is an answer to.
- A plain summary for AI crawlers. A simple text file on your site that says who you are, what you offer and where the answers are. It costs nothing and removes guesswork.
Does your business need it
Ask yourself one question: do your customers ask AI tools for recommendations in your field? For clinics, professional services, trading companies, hotels, restaurants, schools and most B2B suppliers, the answer is already yes and rising. For a corner shop that lives on foot traffic, a good Google Business Profile may be enough for now.
A quick test takes one minute. Ask an AI tool, in Arabic and in English, "who is the best (your business type) in (your city)". If your competitor's name comes back and yours does not, that is the gap GEO closes.
How we do it
Our visibility packages start with an audit of your site and a map of the questions your customers ask, then build the answer pages with structured data and publish articles every month, with a report depending on the package. The details are on the services page. No package guarantees a mention, because nobody can. What it builds is the clearest source in your field, and clear sources get quoted.
If you ran the one-minute test and did not like the result, message us on WhatsApp and tell us what the AI answered.
